Apple City Barbecue Sauce
Mike Mills' sauce. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. For a hotter sauce, add another 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne; a little goes a long way.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Ketchup
- 2/3 cup Rice vinegar, seasoned
- 1/2 cup Apple juice, or cider
- 1/4 cup Cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup Brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup Soy sauce, or Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp Yellow mustard, prepared
- 3/4 tsp Garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp White pepper, ground
- 1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper
- 1/3 cup Bacon bits, ground in a spice grinder
- 1/3 cup Apple, peeled and grated
- 1/3 cup Onion, grated
- 2 tsp Green bell pepper, grated
Directions
- Combine the ketchup, rice vinegar, apple juice, cider vinegar, brown sugar, soy or Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, white pepper, cayenne, and bacon bits in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Stir in the apple, onion, and bell pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, 10 to 15 minutes or until it thickens slightly, stirring often.
- Allow to cool, then pour into sterilized glass bottles or a clean jar and refrigerate.
