Untitled in the file. Makes 2 to 3 dozen, depending on size.
Ingredients
- 1 Active dry yeast, package
- 1/4 cup Water, warm
- 3/4 cup Milk, hot
- 3 tbsp Shortening
- 3 tbsp Sugar, granulated
- 1 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1 Egg, beaten
- 4 cup Flour, all-purpose, or enough for a stiff dough
- Butter, melted
Directions
- Dissolve the yeast in the warm water. In a large bowl mix the hot milk, shortening, sugar and salt and cool to lukewarm. Stir in the yeast and egg.
- Add 2 cups flour and beat until smooth, then gradually stir in more flour until the dough leaves the sides of the bowl.
- Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes. Put in a buttered bowl, turn once, cover and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until almost doubled, about 1 hour.
- Press down to remove big air bubbles. With greased hands divide into small pieces, roll into balls and set in a greased shallow pan with sides touching. Cover loosely and let rise until doubled, 45 to 60 minutes.
- Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven 15 to 20 minutes, less for small rolls. Brush with melted butter while hot.
